As seen on the SymbOS mailing list :
Already posted this on MRC, but here again...
Seems that I am back now on the Z80 after a break of nearly 5 years - terrible long time...
In May I started to work on a Amstrad CPC project again. One week ago I developed a little SymbOS application to become familiar with all this stuff. Luckily it seems, that I didn't forget too much... It's nothing special, just another "Conway's Game Of Life" implementation, and it should only demonstrate two things:
Here is a video, I guess I will release this little app in a few days.
Before I can work 100% on SymbOS again I have to finish this other CPC specific project first, but that has to be done until autumn. I need to finish a few things for SymbOS 2.1, finalizing the multiline textbox control, fix some stuff with the new version of the MSX device driver system etc. I really want to make a 2.1 release soon, hopefully end of this year, so that it's possible to concentrate on larger things after that again.
Many greetings and CU soon,
Prodatron

Defender of the Crown is a strategy game for one player written by Kellyn Beck. This is the first Cinemaware title, originally released for the Amiga in 1986. It was then released on Amstrad CPC in 1989, published by Ubi Soft.
When one of three authors and a second landed on a Amstrad CPC forum, it's a powerful fireworks of valuable informations and more which appears. And it happened on CPCRulez.fr. If you kept your child's soul, it's time that I start to tell you a lovely story: once upon a time, there once was a villain, a hero and a beautiful princess...
The Amstrad CPC version of Defender of the Crown was developed by three people in about 6 months :
Brice Rive and Laurent Boucher knows each other since the computer school right after the baccalaureate, both are fans of programming and electronics (which will be useful later as you will see below). Brice then worked on three other games at Ubi Soft for their copy protection : Skateball, Omeyad and the absolute master. These two partners have also worked on an adventure game : E.X.I.T. released in 1988 still with Ubisoft, developed in nine months between the spring of 1987 and early 1988. During the start of this creation, a few hours of work per day, a lot of time to write the script. Soon they started to work full day, and the last few week, about 20 hours work a day. Their adventure of game creators have been possible partly because they got along well, and partly because it was always interesting to note that the other did not always agree. They have never been afraid to spend hours talking to understand each other fully. Thus they won every battle of Kb. There were no losers. As long as they did not understand each other fully, they discussed. Once the case was decided they returned joyfully to their separate work. Note gentlemen that this working method can probably apply equally to life as a couple !
Brice Rive was called up just before the release of Defender. He made the forcing to complete the project before taking on the uniform. Early in his classes, he squashed the remaining bugs from a phone booth: Laurent at the other end of the line was reading aloud the screen of the Pyradev compile, and Brice was dictating corrections! Imagine the cold sweats at Ubi Soft, Laurence is still shaking by windy day...
Let's talk about the copy protection method of Defender of the Crown, which made it impossible to copy on an Amstrad CPC. Brice has used a a trick of the disk controller, which could read formats that couldnt be written. In short, they worked on upgraded CPC. When the game was released, the company responsible for the duplication contacted the them : they could not copy the BAT ("bon à tirer"). Shortly after the release of E. X.I.T. (one year before Defender of the Crown), a new version of discology appeared up which could copy E.X.I.T. Three weeks of real life business, it isn't much for almost 9 months of work(the protection was not written by them). They were paid both in copyrights, you can imagine the result of sales (pirating is bad, subliminal message). No more royalties from this moment.
There were tools to copy data on disks in a special format. Each sector had a well-defined content : code, sprites, screens, music. No directory of course, only direct access to the disk. From memory, there was one sector per track. The floppy disk controller knows how to read but not write it. This is the trick. On their developpement Amstrad CPC, a switch and a resistor were soldered between a printer port and a part of the floppy drive. The printer port, under the orders of homemade BIOS was ordering the disk controller to stop writing a sector before erasing the following sector. Ubisoft have opened their eyes very wide when they saw for the first time the game on a single diskette (sector size 6, that's 240k for 40 tracks per side or 480 KB of uncompressed data). It was a compact format... At startup, Brice was turning off the OS to install his own, with just enough, to optimize RAM usage. They have spent nights and nights battling to save KB. Brice needed much RAM for his code, and Laurent for the images. They did eat much pizza and drink much beer to work... And the cherry on the cake, a handy utility last: upload and download of their work from CPC to another with a Minitel (model 1B had a reversible modem, 1200/75 or 75/1200, with an external jack to the internal modem). Long live the serial port ! Furthermore the application had a kind of integrated chat, because the phone couldnt be used while transferring via the Minitel. This original chat/transfer program was also found with Defender of the Crown sources. The needed cable between the printer port and the external jack of the minitel was just needing 3 connexions. It was the same cable who permits to download program from commercial servers to an Amstrad CPC. When programming E.X.I.T. such possibility didnt exist still, so backup disks were traveling on a bike (well what about pigeons instead ?).
We can thank Brice Rive for providing the complete source code of Defender of the Crown to the curious. This means we can hope for new versions with more european languages supported, improved graphics (oversan screens ?) especially on CPC + with its improved palette, bug fixes (at least the princess bug). The data (music, screens and sprites) are all in special format readable by the game and utilities written by Brice. Sprites are available as OCP files, the screens in a mosaic in GIF format.
As so often, the game used only 64 Kb of RAM to support the Amstrad CPC 464 and 664. If Brice Rive could have used 128 Kb, he would have improved the playability with less disk access, the animation of sprites during battles, fix a bug that greatly diminishes the appearance of the princesses (and what is a story without a princess I ask you ?). Note that there is no cheat in the game.
The Amstrad CPC version of Defender of the Crown was made without the use of material derived from another port, no sources, no graphics, just playing for hours with the Atari ST version, well with just a rather short article about the internal of the game, as the original developers were not available. Of the 64 Kb of RAM, 32 are used for code, 32 for video. All developed solely with the Amstrad CPC Pyradev compiler.
For graphics, a hacker was responsible for extracting them from the Atari ST version (Tsuno, well known at the time), and a conversion was made from this raw extraction, with an early result needing much work before achieving some satisfaction. Laurent Boucher still has nightmares at night about the Amstrad color palette (small exaggeration) to the point he is still able to recite 24 years later palette and the interleaving in memory ... The purple was essential for shapes, three different intensities from black to white. The degraded red-orange were too mixed for that. They found their natural place where the scene was lit by a fire. Fortunately, there was still no electric light in the middle ages. Laurent Boucher has used many homemade programs for cutting and editing sprites and viewing their animation. Defender of the Crown pictures werent compressed.
Note that there is a recent version of Iphone / Ipad Defender of the Crown .

In 1986 Taito released the arcade game Bubble Bobble featuring the twin Bubble Dragons Bub and Bob. It was converted in 1987 on Amstrad CPC by Software Creations and distributed by Firebird. Alas this Amstrad CPC version had no music, nice sprites (or not), sound effects (my ears are still bleeding).
That's why César Nicolas Gonzales (author of the CPCE Amstrad CPC emulator) started a faithful remake of the arcade version which could work on an Amstrad CPC 464 (only 64 Ko) : BB4CPC. So this remake uses the full 16 colors of the Amstrad palette, music, nice sound effects, enhanced sprites, all the original levels and final boss. It was released a few days ago just after christmas 2011. Tom et Jerry did some work on the music.
In 2005 Tom et Jerry did port a Loriciels adventure game written on Philips VG5000 and Oric Atmos : Citadelle.

R-Type was written in 1987 by Keith A Goodyer for Activion (Electric Dreams label) which gave him only 21 days to write the port, by using the ZX Spectrum version (written by Bob Pape). He used the PDS system written by Foo Katan, probably the world first IDE editor, cross assembler, linker and debugger development. it was running on a PC (ms-dos) with extra hardware that allowed to send the compilted code directly onto the target hardware. It eventually supported development for Z80, 6502 and 68K.
Here is the method he used :
Given the extream time limits i was given to the port this is basic strategy that I took to do the port... (I hope i remember all this correctly).
The spectrum had its ROM in the lower 16K, and the 48K of RAM above it. So I configured the Amstrad to locate the MODE 1 screen in the lower 16K, and loaded the spectrum version in the top 48K (As it would be located on a spectrum - and ran it). I then went through the code line by line, modifying anything that 'plotted' pixels on the screen to something that would plot the equivalent pixels on on Arnolds screen.
As the spectrum screen is 'Attribute Based' I continued to used all of Bobs 'Colour' code, and the whole 768 bytes of the spectrum colour attribute screen is running on the Amstrad version. When ever there was a 'Byte' write to the spectrum screen, I would use a look up table to indexed by the byte and the value of the corresponding spectrum colour attribute to extract the two bytes required to produce the correct pixels on the CPC screen. Then all I had to do was port the control (Sinclair/Kempston) to CPC stuck, and the Sound and the job was done. A few days with DJL to add the 'Protection' and the job was done.
Now the sad news... about 5 years ago, I had a massive leak in my roof, and all my records (including the source code) was destroyed.
Now some Trivia: At the time I had a 464, 664 and a 6128 - I took the final masters down to Activision, and it would not run on their 6128. It tuned out that at some point in time, Amstrad had made a small revision to the design that meant that a the interrupt would fire just before a frame fly back pulse, where on previous versions it would occur just after. The net effect was that when my code was waiting for the frame fly back pulse to occur, the interrupt would trigger just before it, go off do some processing, and by the time it had finished the processing and returend to the main code loop, had missed the pulse - and locked up.

In 1986 Dinamic Software published its second try text adventure game : Arquimedes XXI. It was also the the second comercial text adventure made in Spain after Yenght and, indeed, it was the first job of Jorge Blecua (Egroj) in this field, previous to other games as Don Quijote or Abracadabra. It was made in BASIC and Assembler as the comercial parsers didn't appeared yet. Arquimedes XXI is a Dinamic classic game only available for Spectrum and MSX, until now ! With the efforts of DevilMarkus, MiguelSky (for the adaptation on Amstrad CPC), PulkoMandy (french translation, main music conversion), voXfReaX (english translation), today you can enjoy this classic text adventure on your Amstrad CPC. It is available in French, English and Spanish as was Orion Prime before.
Guess what, Axelay is working on a port of Edge Grinder (see below), so says one of my numerous spies, who assured me that it isnt a secret and safe to be announced.
Edge grinder is in fact a work in progress C64 game at the start, the first Format War "Collabortition" (a combination of collaboration and competition) with the plan being for programmers on other 8-bits to consider ways to convert it from the C64 to their platform of choice. So on the Format War web site you can download all you need to port the game, source code, map, background and sprite data.
Good news, since March 2011, GameBase CPC is once again available. V20 is ready since the start of May 2011. Thanks for the hard work, for the preservation of the Amstrad CPC legacy.
In October 2009 I was writing about a possible Iphone port of Lords of Midnight (originally written by Mike Singleton) by Chris Wild. This time it's for real ! There will be some tweaks to A.I., new updated graphics of cource, first version will be just solo, but updates will bring multi-user play.
While waiting for this precious gem, you can either play the original Lords of Midnight game with an emulator, or with one of the various following ports :

Kevin Thacker's conversion of a Magic Bytes reflexion game released in 1989 : Blue Angel 69 (written by Winfried Stappert) is now available. The original game is turn based (vs computer or another player). The screen draws a 8x8 chessboard filled with positive or negative numbers. Each turn, the player must choose a number whichs on the same linge (or column for the other player) that the last chosen number. Once chosen the number est removed from the chessboard and added or substracted from the player score. The goal of the game is of course to have more points than your adversary at the end of the game (where you will see the sexy robot fully).
Blue Angel 69 has been programmed by Kevin Thacker, graphics by Markus Hohmann, CAT art, inlay, disc label by Kukulcan, Blue Angel 69 website hosted by Markus, created by Kukulcan.
You can download the FULL game and source from Kevin Thacker's website.
In the sources you will find a library to use StarKos from z88dk, and within morelib some extras for loading/saving files using amsdos, displaying double height chars and more. The code also includes a modified version of cpcrslib which Kevin modified to try and make the code smaller. Kevin hope others using z88dk to make games will find these sources useful.
All build files and tools (excluding z88dk) are in the download. Kevin Thacker provides all so that you can learn from it, and that's a very good idea.
You will also be able to download it from cpc-power, and here you will also find cassette inlay and a disc label, both created by Kukulcan.

This is one news I should have written months ago, so much to say, though it will still be short. The Mojon Twins are spanish developers who simply piss code like cows do, I really dont know where they find time to write so many games.
Their latest creation is Cheril of the Bosque.
Dont hesitate to get their other games, many are coming with the sources like Kevin Thacker did with Blue Angel 69.

Color Lines v1.03 by Tom et Jerry is out (bugs corrected) on Tom et Jerry (GPA).

Too bad it's not the Burnin' Rubber we all know, which came with all Amstrad CPC+. Instead this game was called Bump 'n' Jump, aka Burnin' Rubber in Japan, it's a 1982 Japanese arcade game created by Data East Corporation.

Ten years after the development of this game started, it's out. First, I would like to introduce this reflexion game with the own words of the author (who for sure had smoken a CPC+ cartridge as he seems to be under the effect of Acid) :
Warning, warning ! Color Lines must not be put in everybody hands. Wonderful graphics, melodious music, perfect playability are just there to hide the incredible addiction power of this game. Enter a world where pure logic and sometimes luck are you only weapons !
Sadly the physical package (box, documentation, 3 and 3,5 inch disk) will be only available to the lucky people who were present at the Amstrad Expo Meeting. Back from the meeting, Tom and Jerry will release a .DSK of his game. Maybe later package will be available for order, not sure though. The documentation and the game itself are in french and english.
To play this game is easy, on a 9x9 chessboard you have to align 5 circles of the same color in all possible directions, the game ends when the chessboard is full.
Many people did contribute to the game (France, Greece and United Kingdom) :
The first picture (front cover of the game) below is a collector, you see on it my hands taking the photo

Kevin Thacker is finishing working on a conversion of a Magic Bytes reflexion game released in 1989 : Blue Angel 69 (C64, PC CGA and EGA) written by Winfried Stappert. The original game is turn based (vs computer or another player). The screen draws a 8x8 chessboard filled with positive or negative numbers. Each turn, the player must choose a number whichs on the same linge (or column for the other player) that the last chosen number. The goal of the game is of course to have more points than your adversary at the end of the game (where you will see the sexy robot fully).
For the history, the term Sexy Robot is used to describe Hajime Sorayama's renditions of the female robot forms which is covered with silver metal, first created in 1979. Initially, Sorayama had the idea to combine robots with eroticism to create the Sexy Robots.

It has been ages since I last went on the web site of the 2 Guillion brothers, the authors of Sapiens. I am the happy owner of 2 Orion Prime (see below). Well 1 copy will be given there as soon as I find a proper contest.
As you can see the exterior of the box is really nice, and what you will find inside is as good as the exterior (very funny, but I wont say more). There is also an audio CD inside.
Orion prime did let me know that : 1) I have a dead CPC (thanks god, my MP-2F is still working), 2) I have a CPC with a bad video cable, 3) I have a CPC with keys which wont work anymore, 4) I have a working CPC, 5) I have a working CPC+ but with no 3,5" drive (which I already knew). Thanks Orion Prime :-) That said, I should have 1 or 2 more CPC somewhere else in my home, but I will do some archeology work later.
First experience with the game, graphics are nice (but we already knew that), the interface is simple and easy to use, the texts are loaded with a good sense of humor (any Heinlein lovers in Arkos and Les sucres en morceaux ?), and I know at least that I can open doors blocked with codes.

Dont forget that Orion Prime is out tomorrow 16th September 2009 (french only, but english, german and spanish will be available later). If you ordered Orion Prime, you will receive it soon. Otherwise you will only be able to download it as a .DSK file the 28th October 2009.
